Reuters: Cuban Officials Attack U.N. Ruling on Imprisonment of American
Cuba reacted angrily on Wednesday to a United Nations ruling that Havana’s imprisonment of Alan Gross, an American contractor, was arbitrary, and it denied assertions that Mr. Gross’s health was deteriorating and that he might have cancer. Josefina Vidal, a Foreign Ministry official, said Cuba had received a copy of a yet-to-be-published decision by the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention on Tuesday, the third anniversary of Mr. Gross’s arrest and the same day the United States Senate passed a resolution demanding his release. The working group is part of a United Nations human rights body, but holds little power to enforce its ruling. Mr. Gross, 63, has been jailed in Cuba since Dec. 3, 2009, and is serving a 15-year sentence for providing Internet equipment to Cubans under an American program that Cuba considers to be subversive.
