AP: Florida’s ban on university travel to Cuba stands
The Associated Press
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — The U.S. Supreme Court won’t review Florida’s ban on using state or tuition funds for research trips to Cuba.
The high court declined to take an appeal in the case on Monday.
The Republican-controlled Legislature slapped the ban on public colleges and universities in 2006. It prohibits spending on trips to Cuba and other countries deemed by the federal government to sponsor terror.
It was challenged by Florida International University’s Faculty Senate and several individual plaintiffs.
The decision lets stand a ruling by the 11th U.S. District Court of Appeal in Atlanta. That court found the state statute is not pre-empted by or in violation of any federal law.
