The Cubanology OP/ED Blog: Why Stephen King Made Me Love/Hate Horror
In the essay “Why We Crave Horror Movies,” Stephen King argues that we are all insane and those of us that have managed to stay out of the asylums are just able to hide our insanity a little better than the rest. King notes that, via a system of punishment and reward, we are conditioned as infants to behave in a way that often suppresses our instincts as rational beings. Congeniality towards others (a little girl giving her aunt a kiss) merits praise; antisocial or downright hostile behavior (cursing out an unnecessarily nitpicking third grade teacher) merits a spanking. This reality manifests itself cyclically — generation in, generation out.
